How paying for success can accelerate social innovation

In June 2014, the Mowat Centre delivered a two-day executive education course on social impact bonds (SIBs) in partnership with the Harvard Kennedy School Social Impact Bond Technical Assistance Lab, the MaRS Centre for Impact Investing, and Finance for Good. Held in Toronto, Ontario, the two-day course comprised numerous sessions that addressed wide-ranging issues pertaining to SIBs:

  • Current state of SIBs in Canada and the United States, and how SIBs can help overcome challenges to solving social problems
  • Review of basic SIB model and the role of various stakeholders
  • Developing SIBs
  • Data requirements for SIBs
  • Financial modelling tasks and the risk and investment structure of SIBs
  • Challenges faced by not-for-profits in participating in SIBs
  • Interpreting and designing impact evaluations

In addition to the sessions, the course also featured a conversation with impact investors, a roundtable with provincial and federal government leaders, and a public event on SIBs.
